100 Years of Teaching German in India
Knowledge of the German language
The year 2014 marks the centenary celebration of teaching German in India. What began as an initiative at the University of Mumbai (then Bombay) by German and Swiss missionaries at St. Xaviers' College and Wilson College now exists as the Department of German catering to approximately 900 students annually, making German one of the most sought after foreign languages students wish to pursue at the University of Mumbai.
The celebrations spread over the entire year bear witness to the growing importance of the German language in India. With the onset of globalisation and German companies making their foray into India and vice versa, the significance of possesing the knowledge of the German language is only further augmented.
