Karlsruhe at the "Kala Ghoda Festival" in Mumbai
ZKM participates with “AR sculpture”
The “Kala Ghoda Festival” in Mumbai draws over a million people to the quarter on the southern tip of the metropolis. In addition to many small stands from all areas of art and creative crafts, a number of sculptures are on the street of the district.
The mostly young audience walks through the festival with their smartphone in their hand, looking for new selfie opportunities. This is where the Karlsruhe ZKM comes in – with this year's installation: it partly exists in reality, but can actually only be viewed in Augmented Reality, using a smartphone.
"Visitors can view this through a website that can be used without installing an app", explains project manager Christian Lölkes from ZKM, the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe.
The Baden-Württemberg cultural delegation headed by State Secretary Petra Olschowski also took a look at Karlsruhe's creative approach at the “Kala Ghoda Festival”. "The cooperation between ZKM and the cultural institutions in India is also based on the broad network of the India Board Karlsruhe," explained Martin Wacker, Managing Director “Karlsruhe Marketing and Event”.
In addition to art in public space, which is viewed (and photographed) by over a million people in Mumbai in one week of the festival, the ZKM also organized workshops in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya.
“Colorful Shaders 101”, for example, is about how you can become a digital artist through codes. “Shader” offers one possibility, Lölkes explains: Small computer programs that can set the color of a pixel on a screen based on certain parameters, such as position or time. "With a few simple lines of code, participants can create their very own colorful, psychedelic or monochrome geometric compositions," says Lölkes. In the workshop, the participants are taught the basics of the “shader codes”, which are useful for creating their own generative works of art. Information: www.zkm.de
